Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.

AkzoNobel, a multinational company in the manufacture of paints and coatings, has announced the closure of its production facility in Wapenveld, Gelderland, resulting in 143 job losses. The affected unit produces well-known paint brands such as Sikkens and Flexa. The company is currently in consultation with trade unions and the works council to explore possibilities for reassigning affected workers to other locations within Europe. The restructuring is part of a broader programme involving €250 million in cost-saving measures, which include the closure of several European sites. The company cites market developments and rising operational costs in Europe as key drivers.
